It's been said so many times, "theirs is the NUMBER ONE radio morning show in America"... unfortunately they weren't talking about Crash Kelly [Krash Kelley] and his cast of characters!  It's been 8 years since Crash Kelly (aka Andy Connell) has been heard on the morning airwaves and many wonder where Crash is and what he's up to these days. The ORIGINAL Crash Kelly [Krash Kelley] woke morning listeners all over Texas, Louisiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin since the late 1970's and has made many fans and friends along the way. San Angelo, Killeen, Temple, Sherman, Dallas, Fort Worth, New Orleans, El Paso, Tyler, Rockford, Eau Claire, Madison, and Green Bay radio fans enjoyed the dry, blunt, refreshing wit of Crash and Company. With the cast of characters over the years: Katie Piper, Sue Stevens, Deputy Barney, Rich Watkins, Stanley Boyd, Al Toona, Dan Burns, Mr. Manly, Chef Perry, Leighann Stephenson, Shotgun Shannon, Chris Merle, Valerie Lego, Jennifer Jackson, Katelynn Kross and others, waking up and getting off to work was never a chore.  KOOV went dark in March of 2000 when the Copperas Cove country station format was sold to Cumulus Broadcasting.

A Crash and Burns morning radio show stunt was featured in a movie back in '97.  Dan Burns and Crash Kelly met Michael Moore at Morning Show Boot Camp in Atlanta.  The three hit it off and a few months later Michael Moore phoned to say that he was going to be in the area (Madison, WI at WJJO).  He asked Crash and Burns to come up with a radio stunt and he would consider filming it. He bought the staged stunt that teased then Governor Tommy Thomson's office.  It made it to the big screen and now you can see it featured on that DVD.   Rather you care for Moore's views or not, it's an entertaining, earthy production.

Every now and then, someone will ask "Crash... where did THAT nickname come from?" Here's the scoop from Crash Kelly's own mouth:

MOST HEARD "RADIO" VERSION: I used to race motocross in junior high... I wasn't very good at it... after a while I became very good at "crashing" ... it became my nickname. (not all true). Actually, a General Manager in Madison, Wisconsin didn't want me to use ANDY as my radio handle (it was a male-oriented rock station) and challenged me to come up with a cool nickname... I used CRASH, because...

INSIDE TRUE VERSION: Back in the late 80's, a young lady I was very attached to grew tired of our long distance relationship and called it off for good. I was working part-time weekends deejaying at a four star hotel. My father was running a car dealership in town and that weekend he was out of town deer hunting. He loaned me his brand new Celica (one payment was made on it). After my shift at the club, I got sooooo drunk they made me leave. You know where this is going: I ended up "crashing" into some guy's telephone pole in his yard... ran that car up the guywire--completely tore off the bottom -- totaling the vehicle. All I got was a busted lip. The insurance company and cops were "dumb-founded" that I wasn't killed! One of my dad's salesman at the dealership immediately began hazing me. Everytime I showed up or he'd call me at the radio station, saying "Hey Crash!... Is this Crash Kelly?" My radio handle at the time was ANDY Kelly. Pretty soon it caught on and everyone was calling me Crash. Well, I never drove drunk again and I kept the name as a reminder.

This cool thing was my dad didn't yell or make any fuss. All he said was "I'm thankful you're alive.... a car is a thing, things can be replaced... you can't." One of my favorite songs is "Everything I Own" by David Gates of Bread. David wrote it after his father had died, in honor of his father's memory.

...AND NOW, YOU KNOW... THE REST OF THE STORY...
